This recipe is so easy to make, you literally just throw all the ingredients into a jar and whisk with a fork till blended! If you can’t be bothered to make this nut butter sauce, you can just melt down some very dark organic chocolate (at least 85%!) but this sugar free nutty chocolate sauce tastes so creamy and indulgent, just like Nutella, except it’s totally free from horrible vegetable oil and sugars that can cause acne.
Not only is this sugar free hazelnut chocolate sauce is free from nasty refined sugar, but it’s also free from the natural sugars which can still play havoc with our skin. Tonnes of health foodies have their own version of “sugar free Nutella” which use natural sugars such as honey, maple syrup of coconut syrup and although these natural sweeteners are better than refined table sugar, if you’re struggling with blood sugar imbalances and acne, then these types of sugars can still pose a threat to your skin, your hormones and your health.
Sugar free hazelnut chocolate sauce for acne prone skin
Over-indulging in sugary treats and other high carb foods causes the pancreas to dump a load of insulin and IGF-1 to help maintain balanced blood sugar. While insulin is essential to maintaining blood sugar balance, too much insulin and IGF-1 wrecks havoc on your skin just as much as acne villains; androgens. Not only does too much insulin lead to increased sebum production but it also makes the skin extra sensitive to androgens which will further increase sebum production, hyperkeratinisation, blocked pores and inflammation. Unfortuantely, whether you get your sugar fix from table sugar or organic, raw coconut nectar hand picked from virgin coconuts the effects of sugar will still be the same on your acne.
If you’re serious about clearing your acne naturally then cutting back on the sweet treats is something you really need to consider. Thankfully, there are two natural sweeteners that are totally safe for acne sufferers. If you have a sweet tooth then purchasing some liquid stevia and Yacon syrup will be a wise choice for those times when you’re craving something sweet but don’t want to send your blood sugar levels crazy.
Stevia has a glycemic index of 0 and yacon syrup has a glycemic index between 1 and 5, meaning they both have a very minimal impact on your blood sugar levels! to put this in to perspective, refined sugar has a glycemic index of 65, honey has a glycemic index of 50 and coconut sugar has a glycemic index of 35!
This hazelnut chocolate sauce is really versatile…you can add it to overnight oats, chia puddings or as a dipping sauce for some big juicy strawberries! However, as today is Pancake Day it would be rude not to team this delicious gooey sauce with a huge stack of pancakes! You can get all the recipes for my acne friendly pancakes here:

You really can’t get much easier then this – simply mix all the ingredients together in a container and store in the fridge for a week, although I guarantee it won’t last more than 24 hours! You can make your own nut butter by blending 2 cups (300g) of raw hazelnuts (soaked overnight) till smooth – it’ll work out a bit cheaper in ingredients but I’m lazy and would rather just buy some pure hazelnut butter already made up!
- 170g (1 small jar) smooth hazelnut butter (other nut butters can be used)
- 2 tblsp raw cacao powder
- 1 tblsp coconut oil
- 1 tblsp yacon syrup
- 5-7 drops liquid stevia
