It’s that time of year again. Everyone around me seems to be dropping like flies with various bugs, coughs and colds. I like to keep my immune system in check with a daily dose of lemon & ginger – I swear by this simple, age-old concoction – it really helps to keep those nasty germs at bay!
Lemon
With its natural antibacterial properties and high levels of vitamin C, Lemon acts as a strong defence against germs and is also one of the most alkaline foods you can get!
Ginger
Ginger has been used for centuries to relieve a sore throat and loosen up mucus. Though ginger is best known for its ability to calm an upset stomach, it is also said to relieve aches and pains due to its anti-inflammatory properties.
Ginger & Lemon Healing Tea
I like to take my tonic in two different ways. I either boil up some water and fill up a large thermos flask, squeeze the juice of 1 lemon, peel and grate a thumb-sized piece of ginger into the flash and drink throughout the day. This method ensures I’m also getting plenty of fluids as well as the added benefits of lemon and ginger. I also like to make a concentrated shot of this tonic by simply juicing half a lemon and a chunk of ginger – be warned though, this shot packs quite a fiery punch!
To give your tea an extra kick, pop in a stick of warming cinnamon or ½ tsp of Turmeric and some ground pepper to receive an extra boost from their anti-inflammatory, anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties!
Do you drink more healing teas during the winter to boost your immune system? What’s your top tip for keeping bugs at bay?
