This is a great question and causes so much confusion over hormone-related acne! Unfortunately, blood tests can be pretty useless when it comes to working out which exact hormones are the issue.
The reason basic blood panels don’t give enough information is because a blood test takes a single snapshot of your current hormone profile. Not only does this snapshot change every single day, for some hormones like cortisol it changes multiple times throughout the day! This makes it very difficult to get a clear understanding of what’s truly going on when you’re just taking a random blood sample on the day/time you get a doctors appointment.
Secondly, hormone activity doesn’t happen in the blood so it doesn’t give you the full picture. While blood tests can be helpful for testing thyroid and insulin levels, it’s not very accurate at testing sex hormones such as testosterone, oestrogen and progesterone as it usually reports total hormone levels rather the “free” or “active” hormone levels!
